A splash of colour in Portugal Village

On the wall outside the Discount Mart on Dundas West in Little Portugal, a brightly-coloured piece of graffiti serves as a reminder to passerbyers of the vibrancy and heritage of Portugal Village.

If a purpose of a monument is to speak to the future and the past, I would say that the graffiti outside the Discount Mart is a telling monument.

The graffiti features bright yellow bubble letters with a red shadow on a green background. This is similar to the flag of Portugal, which is also green, red and yellow. It seems to serve as a reminder to both long-time residents and new immigrants in the area that regardless of the changes that the area goes through, it remains, and will always be, Portugal Village.

The graffiti shows a sense of pride that the community has in their heritage and roots, and brings a bright splash of colour to an otherwise bland, colourless day.
