Are you down with the scene?

I don’t know exactly when it happened, but it suddenly hit me this weekend at a friend’s show: scenester kids are bloody trendy. I was standing in a bar in Brampton (called Hype) on Sunday night to watch a hardcore show featuring The End and Cancer Bats. It was an all-ages crowd and the average kid couldn’t have been older than 15.

I was standing around waiting for the second band to start when a friend and I started talking about how decked-out these kids were.

According to urbandictionary.com scenesters are, “kids who listen to usually hardcore, emo, indie, grunge, screamo music or something of that assortment.” The girls and guys tend to look almost exactly the same. They wear tight jeans, studded belts done up to the side, a bandana tied backwards around their neck and slip-on Vans or Chuck Taylors. Their hair is usually parted way to the side, swept over their face and done in black and bleach blonde variations. Stretched earlobes are respected on both sexes and a mass amount of tattoos often helps too.

These kids can often be found at the Reverb (Queen and Bathurst) on any given weekend or those that are old enough can head to bars like the Queen’s Head or the Bovine Sex Club. But regardless of whether you want to hang with them, or even be their friend, the fact of the matter is they can bloody-well dress.

Granted they all kind of fall into that whole Goth cliché that by trying to look different they all look the same, but hell, if I could pull it off I’d rock it too.

I often feel awkward around these scenester kids. The girls tend to be no taller than 5’3 and weigh no more than 115 pounds. And in most cases the same can be said for the guys. I’ve tried to rock the bandana around my neck, or in my back pocket, but I’m not delicate enough. I end up just looking like a guy…something that is NOT cute for a girl. Granted I have the ballet flats, and skinny jeans, I think that’s where my scene ends. I’m not covered in tattoos, my hair isn’t dyed and I couldn’t make it stick straight if I was paid.

Though I don’t feel like I fit in I’m still into the scene. The music is outrageous, my friends are great, and the parties are always a good time.

I can work out all I want and go to West 49 over and over but at the end of the day it’s just not for me. I guess my style is going to have to be it for now. In a year some new scene will come up anyways, the scensters will have moved on to something else.

And at least I won’t be the one with tattoos all over my neck!
