A-ha! Finally had a chance to spend a day on my feature story about social marketing. I'm specifically looking at the theory -- the whys and the hows -- of why companies are adopting a social cause to champion in their marketing campaigns.
My research day was spent this way (times are approximate because I'm unsure of a few):
9:30 a.m. Yes, it takes time to read the newspaper before I check my e-mail in the morning. Fortunately, a blogger I have been interviewing responded to me, and a fire off some follow-ups. I'm hopeful with the good start to the day.
10:00 a.m. I continue to search for other sources who can breathe -- I have plenty of reading material on my story. I find a couple and e-mail them.
10:15 a.m. Because of my wealth in reading material, the story can become confusing. Almost every article I read adds a slight variation to the definition of social marketing. I spend a couple of good hours trying to filter what I've read into an idea I can say. If I can say it, then I can write it.
1:00 p.m. One of the professors I e-mailed a couple of hours ago invites me to her lecture on Thursday, which happens to be on the story idea I'm writing about. Unfortunately because I'm scheduled to be at work at that time, I have to decline.
2:15 p.m. I call my editor because I have no clue where I'm going with the story. I don't say that to her, but I guess she can tell. We talk about several aspects of the story, and I'm told to work on the micro, because I have the macro. My editor also provides me with several useful links.
4:00 p.m. I can't go to the lecture, but my professor contact provides me with lecture notes. Helpful.
Somewhere after that I take a break to work on several other assignments that I have jotted in my agenda.
7:00 p.m. I continue reading, and plan out what I have for the story. I have enough for a first draft, which I will take a crack at tomorrow.
