Snapping up the city

With Toronto as his subject and a camera's image sensor as the canvas, Sam Javanrouh captures the beauty of the world on his site, Daily Dose of Imagery.

As the photoblog's name implies, a new photo is posted every day. Most of them are from Toronto, but there are the occasional posts containing a shot from other places in the world. Either way, they're bloody awesome.

Javanrouh works as a creative director at a Toronto-based post production company, but shoots fabulous shots in his free time. His gear consists of a couple of Canon DSLR bodies, and an arsenal of marvelous lenses that would get any photographer watering at the mouth.

Now with all credit to Javanrouh, his post-pro skills are one of the things that really make his photos stand out. Yes, he appears to have a great eye for capturing great moments, but it's after he's taken the picture that he'll add a little charm to the photos by adjusting colour, exposure, vibrance, etc.

His photo style is varied. Sometimes it will focus in on something particular. An old, empty picture frame hanging against a brick wall. Sometimes the shot will be a wide shot, such as this one which appeared the other day.

Nonetheless, his photos tell a story. It can be about the weather (such as two streetcars crossing a snowy street), it can be hard news (someone being led into a cop car). But they capture the moment, and they're well executed.

Another thing I like about his site is that he posts shot information, such as which lens he used, the exposure, aperture, ISO, etc.

My favourite is a snap from the Distillery District. It looks like it might be an HDR image, but it's an effective picture in an interesting part of Toronto, where old meets new. Yesterday's culture, today.
