Considering I’ve been sitting at my computer for the last hour, and have just now decided to write this, I’d say online addictions are running pretty deeply through me. Whether it’s checking one of my three email accounts 20 times a day, or stalking friends on Facebook, I’m ashamed to say, I’m a computer nut. It’s such an interactive tool socially and I can’t deny myself the contact apparently.
Though I do spend an embarrassing amount of time on these networking websites, my online addiction, sadly, doesn’t stop there. I’m confident I’ve written about my tumultuous relationship with Style.com before and for an update, it hasn’t gotten any better. The site is the home to American Vogue, W, Details and GQ magazines. It includes monthly features and photos from each article, plus archives of different features from years past.
If that wasn’t enough to distract me (and my brain of course) they have a photo of every outfit that has walked the runways in Milan, Paris and New York for the last seven years (for men it’s the last three). I just went to confirm those two statements and return to this 25 minutes later. Even while writing this the website is making me unfocused. Each time I go back to it I lose track of time.
Thankfully, unlike most addictions, this one saves me money. I don’t buy W or Vogue half as often now because I just read all the features online. I seem to get more reading done when I’m doing it on a computer screen for some reason…but hey, I guess whatever it takes.
The problem with Style.com is that it just looks so beautiful. The layout, the links, the photos, they’re all done so well that it’s as if you’re actually looking through a magazine…just one that never really ends. And though I now sound like some sort of PR jerk blabbing on about this site, I really can’t say enough about it.
When I interned at FASHION magazine this summer, doing fact checking, I was told Style.com was a valid website to check with. I used it to check the spelling of designers’ names and to double-check whether one of our runway reviews really did represent what walked down each runway. Even the fashion department used the look numbers (each outfit in each show has a number) to order samples from the designers’ show rooms. The site has cred, that’s for sure.
And though having Style.com as my home page may perpetuate some procrastination, I find reading the articles and looking through the site has really taught me what it is to have a top-notch page. As journalists we can never read too many articles, and never do too much research…so unless I decide to go into politics, I can genuinely say I don’t regret one minute spent on that site.
