I interviewed a former architect turned design builder. I asked him what he thought of the LEED design process. He questioned its garbage disposing system -- during construction. I assumed he assumed I was asking him about building environmentally sound condos. He assumed I was asking him about the process of environmentally building condos.
"You mean during construction?" I asked.
He said yes.
"You mean a functioning building?" he asked.
I said yes.
Huh. I never stopped to think about the garbage created and ways it's disposed of on / at a construction site.
But boy -- when I DO stop to think about garbage created and disposed of on construction sites -- simply the GARGANTUAN notion of garbage at a construction site blows my mind.
The architect turned design builder tells me how time consuming and costly it is to build environmnetally.
The electrician needs seperate bins from the drywaller who needs seperate bins from the painter ...
I can't fathom the logistics in environmentally sound contruction.
I wonder what's really involved in building an environmentally sound building. It's not just a structure that is built -- it's what goes into the building as well.
Free-trade condos?! Eco-trade condos.
