Chocolate

1. Chocolate is made from the seeds (cacao beans) of the cacao tree.

2. The natural habitat of the cacao tree is the jungle: cacao trees grow within 20 degrees of the equator in South and Central America, Africa and Asia.

3. Mexico is the closest cacao region to Toronto, Canada.

4. The people who harvest cacao live in small jungle communities.

5. Monkeys get drunk from eating fermented cacao beans.

6. Horses, small pox and cacao are some of the earlier items passed on and traded in the Americas.

7. Milk inhibits the absorption of cacao's antioxidants.

8. Cacao, coffee, sugar, bananas and other tropical fruits are the world's greatest commodities.

9. These commodities are initially traded and sold in small rural markets ... where they are displayed to prospective buyers ... chickens have been seen walking in these products and pooping in them.

10. Chocolate, roses, champagne, gold and diamonds are global commodities which leave behind deep ecological footprints.
