'The mistake further in from the lake' or 'The future’s so bright (I’ve got to wear shades)'

“The most signed public space north of New York’s Times Square.” Has there ever been a more desirable title for a portion of a city? Evidently not, if you’re Dundas Square in Toronto.

If you’ve had the good fortune of seeing Dundas Square of late, you’ve undoubtedly seen the avalanche of advertising that looms large over the square. As of right now, it honestly looks like the Eaton Centre threw up on its neighbouring corners.

But the best is yet to come. As the monstrous Metropolis building continues to grow, you can almost feel Dundas Square closing in a little more by the week.

I understand that advertising has a place in major cities, that’s understandable. Toronto has also devoted a lot of public space, time, and funds to more aesthetically appealing and culturally respectable projects but I don't necessarily see the appeal in actually striving to duplicate an organically chaotic area like Times Square.

A little piece of Naomi Klein might die every day this project gets closer to completion.

Thanks Gaya,

Based on that "most signed space North of Time Sqaure" title, I'm lead to believe that Dundas is smaller in comparison.

As per more advertisements per square foot, I haven't been able to track down anything specific.

But perhaps this link to a shot of Times Square can give a little perspective.
